Fun Times Coming Up in Kirkland

4thofJuly 004 4thofJuly 010 What a great day we had for the fourth! My kids decided they didn't want to ride their bikes in the parade because that would prohibit them from picking up candy - a very critical and strategic move on their part.  Instead, we decorated our razor-boards so we could hop off and scoop up treats on a moment's notice.  Penny Sweet, who leads the effort for making that amazing day happen said she thinks it may be the largest attendance we've had so far.  She's guesstimating there were 30,000 people!  LOVE the patriotic enthusiasm!

Concertsinpark 002 Next up?  Concerts in the park start this week- always a fave!  Due to some budget cuts they will be only be on Wednesday mornings at 10 (kids' shows) and Thursday evenings at 7.  No more Tuesday night, fyi. Don't forget to throw a few bucks in the basket when you attend so they can keep this program going.  You can check out who's playing at Marina Park by clicking here.  This Thursday will be City Knightz - shout-out to Mac on bass- we were in our Kirkland Citizen's Academy class together.

KirklandUncorked09 Two weeks from now you should be heading down to "Kirkland Uncorked."  It's all there- wine, food, music, boats, classic cars, art, grilling competitions and an amazing setting that is our own Lakeshore Plaza at Marina Park.  You can buy tickets for the 'Tasting and LifeStyle Garden' on-line or when you get there ($20-25).  The rest of the festival is open to the public and free!  Check out the website for all the details. The dates are Fri July 17 through Sun July 19th.

See you around town! ~j

I was Attacked by Dustbunnies

Computer-frustration I have been computer-less for about a month now.   I'm sorry if you haven't heard from me, but now you know why.   We THOUGHT my hard drive was fried. This is a little embarrassing, but I am going to take one for the team in order to save you a little money and a mountain of wasted time and frustration.  When I had the guys from Click Engineering pick-up my CPU and run diagnostics on it they discovered the inside was covered in dust.  And trust me, this is not from lack of use (ask my kids!).  Apparently every six months or so we should be cleaning the dust out of the inside of our computers.  Who knew?  PC users-there's a little screw in the back that loosens and allows the side wall of your hard drive to glide open.  You're then looking at the guts of your machine and an empty cavity which likely has a bunch of dust sitting on it.  A paper towel and can of air to blow it out should work just fine. Since I learned this lesson the hard way, I thought I would enlighten you too.

Now, onto better gossip.

2CH WHAT IS WITH 2CH?!!! I saw they had a nice little write-up in the Kirkland Reporter this week, which is kind of ironic because about 2 days ago I stopped there to read the small barely legible handwritten note on their front door.  It said something about being on 'vacation' and therefore closed for the next 2 weeks.  As I was turning around in the parking lot I happened to look in the window and notice there is NOTHING in there.  No counter, no register, no nothing.  Someone bringing it out the back door and loading it into a truck. That's some vacation.  This place is like a bad boyfriend and I just can't figure it out.  Are you there for us or not??

There's some good news too: the sand volleyball court on Lake St (next to Beachhouse Grill) is being re-vamped.  It's a collaborative effort between local company Volleyball USA, some Eagle Scouts and the city.  Should be super cool when it's done in just a few weeks so hold onto your swim trunks til then.

Callahan Concierge just opened in downtown Kirkland if you're in the market for a personal assistant.  They offer services for individuals, families, corporate, high end residential and housekeeping.  It's $35/hr with a two hour minimum.  They even offer a drive-up service where you can pull up on your way home from work and they'll get your items right out to you. A girl can dream, right?

MJ And such a bummer about Farrah and Michael Jackson.  That's a lot of heavy retro sadness.  It got compounded yesterday when I mentioned Farrah Fawcett to a college-aged kid and he had never heard of her!  As I was explaining her sex symbol icon status and reminiscing over favorite Charlie's Angels episodes, I realized I sound an awful lot like my mom and I should just embrace my old age instead of fighting it. ~j

Good News on the 4th of July Celebration!!

Fireworks After teetering on the verge of not being able to pull the fireworks together for this year, things have really turned around for us.  Not only are the fireworks covered, but the fireworks company is kicking in an extra $2K towards our finale because they thought it was cool the way Kirkland rallied to make this happen.  Way to go!

That's not it--as usual, the kids parade will start at 11:30 and the adult one at 12.  After that wraps up around 1, take the kids over to Heritage Park where there will be 4 FREE bouncy houses donated by the Church of the Nazarene.  Prior to the fireworks show, local band "The Ex Box Boys" will be playing music and doing a light show in the pavilion at Marina Park around 7:30.  Rumor has it they are the 2nd most downloaded MySpace band so get ready for a good show.  Kudos to Penny Sweet for working her magic and pulling this effort together for us! ~j

Summertime on the Water in Kirkland

It's one of the things everyone loves about our city- the lakeside!!  And with things heating up around here, I thought there were a few things you'd like to know ......

GD3997075@A-man-collects-dead-f-7985 -What is with all those little dead fishies?  I've seen them too- the small silver ones that are at Marina Park, Waverly Beach Park and Houghton Beach to name a few.    Lots of people are noticing them and concerned, but the parks dept told me this is a natural occurrence that happens each year as the lake temperatures rises.  So nobody dropped their Clorox bottles overboard, it's just nature doing its thing.  Oddly enough, I happen to know a biologist that works for the government and studies local fish and he was delighted to enlighten me on the complicated ecology of Lake Washington.  So I'll net it out- with warmer temps come natural spring turnover which brings the de-oxygenated water up from the depths as surface water sinks and we lose some little guys in the process.  It's warmer than usual this year, so the turnover is probably bigger than in the past. Luckily, our problem does not look like this guy's (photo left).

-After listening to that lesson, you deserve a treat.  Go straight to Trellis at The Heathman and ask for the special peanut butter and chocolate cookies that aren't on the menu.  To die for. Thanks to the Rexs for sharing this secret with me.

-Agua Verde has arrived at Houghton Beach.  You may have visited this popular spot on Lake Union, but now we have one of our own in the waterside hut previously occupied by Jimmy's on Houghton. Smoothies and quick casual Mexican food is awfully convenient after some sunning and park play.

-Random thought:seems with each new arrival there's a departure too.  Farewell to Cafe Harlequin.  I never could afford to eat there, but I'm sure it was good.

Hamrick-trophy0503 -Waterski and wakeboard lessons are on their way to downtown Kirkland!  Being someone that waterskis a few times a week, I'm a bit biased, but I think this is a super cool idea.  My friend and coach, Mark Lord, owns Seattle Water Sports and will be offering lessons by appt Mon, Weds, Fri, Sat and Sun from 6am til noon starting this weekend until Sept 30th.  Additional hrs in the afternoon and evening may be available based on demand and you can also book group lessons in advance.  They will be operating out of the main Kirkland dock.  Half hour lessons are $50 and equipment rentals range from $5-25.  Mark is a great coach- he's patient (a requirement when working w/me, haha) and breaks things down so that you can build skills in a logical progression.   Whether you are a first timer or advanced, this is a great opportunity to hit the water with some know-how.  Seattle Water Sports will also be giving free tube rides this weekend as part of Kirkland's water event from 12-4  Saturday the 20th (there's also free sailing and kayaking and discounted para-sailing). Call 206-310-2628 to arrange a ski or boarding lesson.

-While we're talking about water sports,  I feel obligated to mention boating safety.  Here's a link to the Kirkland Boater's Guide (who knew?).  Always have a third person as a spotter on board when towing a tube, boarder,  skier or surfer.  When an emergency comes up, say....maybe one Janis waterskiier falls and takes her ski in the back of the head, that extra set of hands is critical in dealing with the situation.  Always have enough flotation devices on board too- and if someone goes overboard you throw it to them (don't go after them and jeopardize your own safety). I saw the sheriff stop a couple of kids on waverunners the other day that were crossing wakes just missing one another.  The water always seems so much less regulated (more drinking, no license) you just have to be careful out there.  Oh, and if you see a ski course that looks like a bunch of buoys in a formation (Kenmore, Yarrow Bay) please please stay away from it.  Bad etiquette. ;-)

-One more thing.  Did you know you could be learning how to play water polo?  And it's FREE.  There's a fun group of people that meet at Marsh Park EVERY Wednesday around 5:30/6pm and have extra equipment available for anyone that wants to join in the fun of kayak polo (don't worry, the boats aren't tippy).  No experience necessary.  And they do this year round.  Whoa.     ~j

"Kirkland First" is Keeping it Local

Found_dollar_bill Kirkland has just launched a free online business directory for Kirkland-based businesses in an effort to promote local spending.  You can check it out at www.kirklandfirst.org .  It's just like a hyper-local yellow pages getting underway, so if you or someone you know owns a local business you should get them hooked into this resource.  It's FREE.  And you know I love free.

As a consumer, you might be surprised at the products and services you can find right here in Kirkland by checking out the site (dog training, A/V rentals, event planning, you name it!).  The goals of the Kirkland First program are to give local businesses more opportunities to thrive, build a stronger local economy, and promote community between business, residents and consumers.   So let's get on board and keep our dollars (the few that we have left) here in town. ~j

Purse Snatchers- Be on the Lookout!!

Purse480 There's a guy/girl team of purse snatchers that have been scoring some loot around the eastside lately.  Here's their M.O.- You're grocery shopping at QFC, Safeway or Fred Meyer, perhaps, with your purse in your cart.  Just as you go to check out the new arrival of fresh strawberries you turn around to your cart and your purse is gone.  It happens that fast!

But of course, our PD is on the case.  They've teamed up with Bellevue and Bothell, where similar crimes were occurring, and have identified the culprits.  But they are not in custody yet!! Keep your eyes out for an old maroon Subaru station wagon (circa 1989) and if you spot it, call the police 425-587-3400 or 911.  These two should be in custody by the end of today.

I chatted with a woman name Dawn that was victimized at 2pm on Sunday at the Totem Lake Fred Meyer.  She just stopped in a for a few things and her purse got boosted in the produce section (which is also unfortunately conveniently located right next to the exit).  When she went to desk to report it, the FM employee replied, "Oh no, not AGAIN! "  Bummer their security guard was mysteriously missing at the time. Anyway, the sticky fingered thief quickly proceeded to  QFC, Bartels and other nearby spots to do a little charging of her own.  So, let's keep 'em on your shoulder ladies (and men with a man purse, I'm cool with that too)!! ~j

Nutrition Labeling Promises Svelte Bikini Bods this Summer

000000000000000000000042545275753 Just kidding-there's no promise. Darn.  You've got to do the work yourself, but it's helpful to know that local chain establishments are giving us the information we need to make healthy choices.   Let's face it, kids like to eat at places like McDonalds, for example (and listen to their Kidz Bop CD's- you moms know what I"m talkin' bout!).   So I end up sitting next to a plastic indoor slide snitching french fries from a 4 year old a little more often than I like to admit.

As of Jan 1, King County requires chain food establishments with over $1M in rev, 15 or more locations, and standardized menus to post their calories/carb/fat/sodium content on their menu board or other clear and visible spot at the point of ordering.  In Kirkland, this means places like McDonalds, Wendy's, Starbucks, Subway, Domino's, Olive Garden, Tully's, Taco Del Mar and more.  This is quite the eye-opener.  Bring your glasses, cause the menu gets a bit crowded with all the numbers.  But the fact of the matter is,  that Southwest Salad with the corn and black beans that I always thought sounded like the healthiest one turns out to be the worst, so I'll be switching to the grilled chicken caesar next time we're at "Ole McDonald's."  If you have a typical 2000 calorie a day diet, you could be blowing more than half of that if you ordered a big milkshake. Yikes!  It's kinda fun taking the quiz on King County's Public Health site. Let me know how you do!  Armed with this kind of information, I think we should all be able to squeeze into our bathing suits this summer.   ~j

Saving Kirkland's 4th of July Fireworks

Fireworks KA-BOOM!  I love that sound.  The deep rumblings, shrill screeches and explosive lights show that is Independence Day.  There's a big effort going on right now by Celebrate Kirkland to raise funding to save Kirkland's 4th of July fireworks.  This group is very high tech- they are on Facebook and Twitter (which I'm still trying to figure out in my non-existent spare time) and even have a blog. The theme this year is: 'Red, white, blue and GREEN all over- reduce, reuse and recycle'.  In past years, the parade and fireworks have always relied on contributions to supplement the community grant that funds this event, however, this year is more challenging than ever to pull together the donations needed to make it happen.  And the barge for the fireworks needs to be reserved by May 30th!!  So, if you love finishing off your evening  on 7/4 by kicking back in Marina Park with an amazing fireworks display, every bit helps, and you can contribute online here.  ~j

BTW- I have lots of things to catch you up on like the Kirkland Police Academy Class I finished recently (you should do this, what fun!) and our remodel completion (what the heck, you should do this too!).  But we just moved and I have boxes up to my ears.  Steve still hasn't set up my computer yet so hopefully by saying this publicly he will quickly get me connected again so I can get going on all of these posts that are swirling in my head without having to figure out his Mac...... ;-)

Wednesday Market Opens in Marina Park

KirklandWedMarket Don't forget to pick up some local produce this Wednesday (and every Weds thru Oct 14th) at the Kirkland Wednesday Market which has MOVED to Marina Park this year and is open from 2-7pm.  Great venue- especially when the weather cooperates!  ~j

Kirkland, Meet Working Girl

WorkingGirl Kirkland author, Karen Burns, has recently published her first book, "The Amazing Adventures of working girl." It's a fabulous, quick and entertaining read with many work situations we can all relate to and practical career advice.  Her matter-of-fact humor and short chapters make it an easy page turner with lots of lessons learned and laughs along the way.    I really enjoyed the "Boss from Hell" chapter and the brutal honesty of "Fake It till You Make It."  Many of the chapters have a quote at the end from somebody exemplifying when a particular lesson applied to their working life.  This book would make a GREAT gift- especially for a recent graduate or a friend ready to make a career change.  Park Place Books hosted Karen's book release party and sold out all of their copies! (that was a few weeks ago, I'm sure they've re-stocked by now)

I had the pleasure of meeting with Karen recently because I wanted to sit and learn a little more about these 59 jobs she's had over the past 40 years in 22 cities.  It took  4 1/2 years to make this book a reality (with a team of supporters, an agent, a patient husband) and it started just by chance.  She was at the Richard Hugo House in Capitol Hill which is a center for writers when she started writing about a few of her past jobs.  Then she became gripped to figure out how many jobs she had really had and her teacher encouraged her to turn her content into a book.  She's been a nanny, a doughnut girl, a ditch digger in Czechoslovakia, an editor and a 'corporate minion' just to name a few.

KarenBurns We met at the Urban Coffee Lounge and I had to coerce her to come out from behind the counter before she got herself a job there too (photo left).  She's a go-getter!  So I knew that since there are so many people out of work right now that she'd have some thoughtful advice to share.  She says there are 2 things you need to do.  First....... DO LESS.  Stop job hunting for a day and go somewhere you've never been.  Take a walk, evaluate what you've been doing and think unfamiliar thoughts (Kinda like this fact-checker turned race car driver).  Ask yourself, "Is what I'm doing working?"  Then........DO MORE.  Do whatever it takes because it's a numbers game.  Have you really tapped into your network? Are you cold calling?  Start doing more of the right things that will yield you results.  And then she adds, "....and don't forget to be near people that make you feel good about yourself." :-)

Karen Burns will be giving a talk about "The Most Important Thing You Need to Know to Get and Keep a Job," this Thursday May 7th at 7pm at Third Place Books.  You should go grab a signed copy and get it into the hands of your closest job seeker.  Maybe it will save them the angst (or enjoyment?) of 59 jobs.  ~j

Kirkland Dog Owners: Watch out for CREEPY GUY!

Dog There have been a few incidents in Kirkland parks recently where a man impersonating an enforcement officer has approached dog owners with their off-leash pets and threatened them with a fine.  It's true that there are leash laws and that we have a real guy contracted by King County to enforce the law, but this creepy guy is described as being strange and aggressive and is giving people the willies.

So, here's what you need to know:

Real Guy: Could give you a $66 ticket, but usually will give a warning
Creepy Guy: Threatens you with a $250 fine
Real Guy: Drives a county vehicle
Creepy Guy: Drives an older white car with a roof rack
Real Guy: Wears a uniform and badge
Creepy Guy: Wears his own creepy fake patch on his shirt

If you are approached by an off-leash enforcement officer, be sure to ask for identification.  If you suspect it is Creepy Guy, call the police (911 or 425-587-3400) and the parks dept (425-587-3300).  And for extra credit, it would be great if you could oh-so-discreetly get a photo or a plate number too.  ~j

Annexation Rears Its Head Again

No nodding off over there.  Because if you aren't paying attention, City Council plans to just sneak annexation right on by us this time.  Last year there was a very long and public campaign around the feasibility of Kirkland annexing the "PAA" (proposed annexation area) which consists of North Juanita, Finn Hill and Kingsgate.  There were about 612 meetings, 392 forums, 213 discussions, 927 debates and then at the end of this very heated topic's lifespan came the conclusion that it was just going to be too costly for the City of Kirkland.  The numbers could not be justified.

So- fast forward to present day and suddenly the numbers can magically work!  Abracadabra!  There's a deadline that's getting ready to expire in order to qualify for state and county financial incentives, so the couSternoffTASER 003ncil quickly had a study session last Monday that was followed by a special council meeting on Tues  where they heard public comments.  Alas-the council voted in favor of annexation by a margin of 5 to 2.  I had Bob Sternoff tased when I found out he voted in support of it (photo left).  Ok, maybe that's a pic from the Police Academy class we're in together--so we just have to agree to disagree. This means that annexation will now go before the Boundary Review Board and be on the ballot in November (only for members of the PAA, not Kirkland residents?!).

Now I am admittedly grossly over-simplifying this topic, but I still can't understand why annexation would be a good thing for Kirkland or its citizens.  Nobody ever gives a straight answer on this one. Or at least an answer with some compelling information.  At least let us vote on it.  We're in our own financial pickle right now (last I heard?).   I've listened to people talk about how the PAA residents already use our parks and shop in our shops.  That's great!  Go ahead! Enjoy! Then someone was saying that Kirkland cherry-picked the business districts in Totem Lake in the last annexation and now we have to 'do the right thing' and annex the neighborhoods.  Huh?  This is an emotional decision now?  That's like adopting a baby when you can't feed your own kids.  My favorite is when someone told me that we can't afford NOT to do this- and that Kirkland could in fact be annexed itself by another neighboring city, like Redmond or Bellevue, if we couldn't get our act together.  ACK. The funds we'd receive from the state/county might help initially, but our expense structure would also inflate and what happens when that catches up with us in ten years when the money runs out?  And what about the service levels we're already accustomed to? Would we be paying more for less? I know this would be great for the PAA and I would love for them to have better services.  But why is this a good business decision for Kirkland and its people?

Wizard Go ahead and comment away, but for the record, I'll say I don't think it's going to make a difference one way or the other.  This annexation seems to be part of some predetermined plan that is operating with the wizardry of OZ.  City workers all talk about this as if it's already been decided.  They're excited for their bigger teams and breadth and budgets.   It's not an 'if' it's a 'when'.  ~j

BeachHouse Bar + Grill Opens Just in Time for Summer

BeachHouse 002 Just when you were feeling sad about the closing of Trenditions, Costco Home and Yarrow Bay Grill we've got an opening for you! We just happened to pop in at BeachHouse Bar + Grill on Thursday night which was their first evening open to the public.  You'll find them at 6023 Lake Washington Blvd which was formerly Fiorente, formerly Clancy's, and formerly The Foghorn restaurant depending on when you blinked.

But the BeachHouse is here to stay!  They have a totally casual vibe which, in this economy, is a really smart move.  Lots of happy hour appetizers and fun drinks at half off between the hours of 3-6 and 9-close.  The inside is the same general layout as its predecessors with some fun new paint colors and the familiar dark beams overhead.  It's a laid-back spot where you can walk in with flip flops on, listen to The Cure  being piped in (don't laugh, it was really on and this was my fave in high school) and be comforted by heartfelt belly chuckles coming from the crowded bar.

And the view doesn't get any better than this!  They are looking into adding a waterfront patio area so keep your fingers crossed.  Another perk-you can even call ahead with an order and pull up to their private dock and they'll deliver to your boat (or just dock and stay).  If they could deliver breakfast and coffee to my boat after my 6am water-ski runs I'd be in heaven.   A girl can dream, right?  Check out Chef Ricky Eng's (formerly of Newport Bay and Stanford's) menu here- you'll find lots of finger food (appetizers, burgers, pizza), a handful of entrees (salmon, rib-eye) and soups/salads too.  I enjoyed my chop chop salad and  friendly service while Steve had the wedge salad and french onion soup which were also very good.  Between that and a couple of drinks we spent $50 which is a very reasonable date night.   Right now BeachHouse serves lunch and dinner from 11am until 10 or close, and plan to serve breakfast in the future.  Go check it out and let us know what you think. ~j

2CH: They're Open. No, they're closed. Yes, they're Open!!!

2CHAGAIN 001 This place open and closes faster than I can read the signs.  But they are definitely open again because we had lunch there today.  And I've got to say, they have really good burgers.  The menu has been completely simplified and there's nothing over $4 (we had the avocado burger- click to enlarge the menu below).  A house burger is $2.75.  I can find that in change underneath my car seats if I dig long enough.

When I questioned them about the abrupt 3 month hiatus, they said the big snow 2CHAGAIN 003 storms hit them hard.  Without steady traffic they had a lot of food to throw away (they used to offer wings, pastas, burgers,  and salads) and the waste was very costly so they couldn't afford to stay open.  Now they have re-grouped a bit and are determined to make it work.  Everything else is basically the same- it's kind of a quirky little place with friendly service, funny music and  offbeat decor but Brady was dancing in his seat and scarfed down his whole burger so it keeps the kids happy.  ~j

98034 Gets Their Amazon Fresh!

Bg-emailHeader-seattleSkyline Good job on the votes, Kirkland! Juanita will not starve after all.  Amazon just announced that they will start making their grocery delivery service available to 98034 starting on April 1st. Order before midnight and your groceries can still be at your doorstep by 6am.   Sounds strange to me, but if you wanted to order a book or DVD  or spatula along with your wine, steak and asparagus they'll bring that to your doorstep too.  And for those of you that expressed concern about buying locally (AMZ is a local company), I noticed they have a 'shop local items' button right on their home page.  ~j

I Have No Idea Where to Park

Parking They've done it again.  Just when we have figured out where all the free parking spots are and when/where we need to pay for them, they change their minds again.  I don't know who 'they' actually is.   Probably the parking advisory board or a city team of consultants or maybe even that unforgiving little lady with the go cart and her chalk on a stick.  Either way, sharpen your eyes on the new signs around town with the up-to-the-minute parking rules.  And I don't mean to be so snickery- this effort is well-intended to offer more free parking and allow people to shop in downtown Kirkland businesses more readily.  But does it have to be so confusing? There's a 'grace period' where they'll just be issuing warnings instead of a hurricane of parking tickets, but I think our meter may have already run out on that opportunity.
As much as I would like to, I can't even begin to explain these changes to you.  There's an entire trifold that has been created complete with maps and color coding so you can be an informed Kirkland parker.
Here it is- study up.  Then I want you to answer this question: It's a lazy Sunday and you are taking the kids to an early dinner at Zeek's.  You find a great parking spot in the Lake Street lot and it's 5:30pm.  Kids need to be in bed by 8.  How much money do you need to put in the pay station?  ;-) j

Vovina nestles into Marina Park

Vovina 003 Marcus and Jamie, co-owners of Vovina (Vo=Vodka Vina=wine) at 15 Lake Street, are getting really excited for their quickly-approaching opening day.  And so are you!  I could tell because when I was in there chatting with them on Friday night (as they unpacked boxes of wine and booze)  people kept trying to open the door every ten minutes Vovina 009

It's inviting for sure-I think this cozy little wine and martini bar is a welcomed addition to downtown Kirkland.  It's nestled right at the bottom of the stairs by Wilde Rover on the parking level of Marina Park.  It has a good feeling with the dark painted open-beamed ceilings, sizzling fireplace, and lots of nook seating topped with pendant lights.  There are some super cool local aged-wood tables (and bar)- check out the pic below.  Expect to find some unique drinks such as absinthe(this is the only place serving this wormwood-derived creation on the east-side), 35 different wines by the glass, 4 beers on tap, martini flights and homegrown cocktails named after employee faves such as "My Mai Tai" and "The Franklin Mint."  Vovina 004

In case those drinks weren't tempting enough, you'll also discover some tasty bites from 3-9 Sun- Wed and 3-10 Thurs- Sat ranging from $7-15.  There's appetizers (ahi tacos, crostini plate..), soups (butternut squash, chicken curry..) and salads (caesar, bibb wedge...)  that can  hold you over or for pre-partying.  But don't be scared to stick around for something more substantial like the Dungeness Crab Risotto, Souvlaki Chicken Skewers or Caprese Pizza. The coolest part is that they just enclosed their patio seating so soon there will be tables and heaters outside.  That will be perfect for summertime, which I am hoping and *dreaming*is right around the corner.  May thru Nov they plan to serve brunch too.  So hustle on in there this weekend!  And tell some friends to check it out too- comment back and let us know what you think. ~j

Those Irish Know How to Party!

Leprechan The Wilde Rover Irish Pub & Restaurant has outdone themselves this year.  Instead of celebrating St. Patty's Day in one measly day, they are declaring it a 2-day event!  And of course you'd expect nothing less than live music and traditional Irish fare!

Monday March 16th you can check out some live Celtic music with Geoffrey Castle and Dan Connolly from 9pm to close while you are dining on some corned beef and cabbage or shepherd's pie.  After 9pm, you'd better be 21 and over.  When your hangover clears by 2:00 the next day (3/17), you can head on back for more celebrating. Music starts at 3pm and your $10 cover charge gets you in to check out the Kennedy Brothers (3-6pm), Geoffrey Castle (6-9pm) and Author Unknown (9-close) in the main room and Big Luv (8-close) in the back room.  The food menu will be limited and a portion of the proceeds will go to Hopelink

Enjoy this extended holiday.  I'm hopeful that Christmas is 2 days this year too. :-)  ~j

Amazon Fresh Expands: Vote for Kirkland!!

Veg For those of you that don't know about Amazon Fresh, it's a great online grocery service.  Everything is fast and fresh and delivered to your door.  They have all sorts of organic and local items too.  You can order online until 10pm and have your groceries waiting on your porch pre-dawn.  Delivery is FREE if you order over $40 (which isn't difficult to do).
Ugh, I sound like a commercial.  I'm not gushing only b/c I'm biased (Steve works at AMZ) but b/c I used to use this service at least once a week when we lived in 98033 and it's a lifesaver.  Then we moved out of our house while it undergoes some major renovations, and we're now in a rental house in 98034.  The landlord conveniently forgot to mention that Amazon Fresh does not deliver here!!!
So- here's what you need to do- VOTE!  Amazon is asking for voters to tell them where their next delivery zip code should be.  The people of Juanita are starving out here!  Let's help them out!!!
VOTE for 98034 here.

Kirkland's Dream Date, Jason Mesnick, Turns into a Nightmare

Mesnickcry I've been festering over this whole thing since I watched "The Bachelor" finale and more importantly the 'after the rose' ceremony last night.   There's Jason crying (photo left)- BOOHOOO!  I didn't want to be hasty and write a nasty-gram blog post right when I got home because my outrage was still fresh.  So, after about 14 conversations, 25 text messages, and a gazillion emails later(you guys crack me up, btw),  I'll write you my I-can't-even-believe-it post now instead.  Because my feelings haven't changed even with time to stew over it.  And I know there are a lot of seething women out there-many with a renewed appreciation for our normal and stable husbands.

Our hometown sweetheart that convincingly charmed America with his nice guy persona has quickly delivered a swift but deadly stab to our hearts.   There's no turning back now, Jason.  We were so disappointed to learn that you're THAT guy.  We've all known one of THOSE and now you're the poster boy.  Branded for life- I hope Molly keeps you around b/c every other woman with a TV knows to run in the other direction.

My problem isn't with that fact that it didn't work out with Melissa- that's ok- things happen, things change.  But to dump Melissa publicly and then be swooning over Molly 5 minutes later was just in poor taste.  I realize you have to live this saga out in the public eye, but you can still have some decency and consideration for others.  Couldn't you have broken up with Melissa privately and then updated us on the show?  I can't believe the network could force you to do that.  It was like a Jerry Springer episode.    I'm suspecting that the threesome knew this was happening ahead of time which doesn't make it any better.  That would make you just actors reaching for ratings in a publicity stunt that happens to be your twisted real life.

I couldn't stay awake for the Jimmy Kimmel episode w/Jason that followed the show, but you can find it here on you tube.  Kimmel is a crack-up poking fun at Jason who's clearly spent some time prepping with PR.  I was listening to the radio this morning and there was a guy that called in to thank Jason for lowering the bar for the rest of the men.  Friends of Jason's seem to be surprised and confused and hopeful that there is more to the circumstance that what we all saw last night.  Everyone who knows him insists he 'really is' a great guy.  Well then, he's got some serious explaining to do. And for her sake, I hope Jillian has changed her phone number.  ~j

"The Bachelor" Finale Party at Third Floor Fish Cafe

Don't even pretend you don't watch the show!!  I know you do.  And in honor of all of us that do, Brian McCarty, the General Manager of The Third Floor Fish Cafe, has decided to invite us to his bar to watch Jason Mesnick give out the final rose on Monday, March 2nd. Will it be Molly or Melissa?  I don't know, but I do know that bottles of wine will be 1/2 off (up to $100) and happy hour is starting early at 8pm.  Let's celebrate. This is a favorite happy hour spot for us anyway- love the fish tacos, romaine salad and ahi tuna.

What did you guys think of the girls tell-all episode last night? Natalie got raked over the coals (yet again).  And how about the cliffhanger for the secret, high drama, emotional, no audience allowed episode that follows the finale?  I hope that this theory is not true.  For Jason's sake.  And Kirkland's.

See you at Third Floor Monday?? ~j

Say Goodbye to Calabria

Calabria 001  Calabria 003 Unfortunately, this is not unfamiliar territory these days.  As we kicked back with some live music at Calabria in downtown Kirkland we started to hear the buzz that Feb 28th will be their last day.  Lease is up and that's all she wrote, although they do have another location in Mill Creek.  So, be sure to go in and say goodbye, enjoy the happy hour ( til 7 pm) where we enjoyed an appetizer, salad, dinner, wine and lots of cougars for $40.  The lasagna was great- really!  Thursdays nights you could always count on hearing Joe and his band-  (photo left)- he strikes an eerily similar image to Lt. Dan from Forrest Gump I know it's amazing.  DJ Mike will be there on the restaurant's last night.  He's from my NJ 'hood so he must be ok (photo rt). ~j

On an aside-thanks to all of you who have mentioned you are missing my posts.  I've still be writing them, but our subscriber list had some technical difficulties (feedburner was bought by google, not an auto update, blah blah blah) but it should be straightened out now.  I've missed you too.  Welcome back. So sorry. My smart-assed self is now back in your face. xoxoxox ~j

The Bachelor: My Jason Predictions

Jillian is on her way out tomorrow night and Melissa is just one step closer to winning herself a Kirkland man.  There.  I said it.

I don't believe all the other over-edited crap.  So maybe DeAnna will come back, but she won't be begging for forgiveness, she'll be doling out some advice.   Jason doesn't need it- he's making good choices.  Especially since he unleashed the crazies (Megan, Shannon) and uncovered a few more- like Naomi's parents.  Sweet Jesus.  Literally- that dad was over the top with the religious messages on our poor little shell-shocked Jewish boy.  And I'm not sure about that crying scene, but I think the only thing that would make him sob like a baby on national TV (aside from happiness) would be Ty.  Maybe he misses him, maybe Ty broke an arm or wants to go home, I dunno, but you get my drift.

What are your predictions?

And would you be up for a finale party at a local Kirkland restaurant if we could pull it together?

Time to Make the Donuts

DonutFactory 003 I attended my first Citizens Academy Class last night at the Kirkland Police Dept and had a great time.  So, I'm going to start by dedicating this post to all of the fine officers in this city that SWEAR to us that they do not really eat donuts.  It's just a myth they say, of course! They're very sensitive about it and it's so darn cute I wanted to let you and them know that I have recently discovered where you can find the best donuts in town.  Just in case there is ever an emergency that requires one.

When Steve and I first moved here from Atlanta we noticed that the Seattle area was obviously lacking in the donut department.  Krispy Kremes are on every corner out there (look! the light is on for hot ones!).  So we were glad to hear the news when Issaquah got their own, but that's too far to drive for some dough.  And growing up in NJ, Dunkin Donuts were just part of life.  I still have my Dad bring me a box of munchkins every time he visits (chocolate, glazed and jelly only please).  This post is shaping up to sound rather weird- I promise I am not a donut fanatic, but every once in a while you've gotta just surrender and have one.  Enough of my donut history lesson, here's the scoop.

DonutFactory 002 Head to Kingsgate to Factory Donuts at 12505 NE 144th Street.  It's nothing fancy, they are just focused on the donuts. And you know when you walk in the place and see the 50 pound bags of pure sugar cane stacked higher than your head that this is not going to be healthy for you.  But there are some serious donuts in there.  The apple fritter is my favorite and Steve likes the sourdough the best.  There are even some Krispy Kreme look-a-likes that I haven't tried yet.  The owner behind the counter barks at you, "Whatchoo want sweetie?!" and it's not easy to decide.  As I carry my box of a dozen away from the counter, my bicep muscles quiver with fatigue.  When your first bite arrives, you instantly salivate b/c your body has never encountered such pure sinful indulgence and the sugar headache is not far behind.

So, if you happen to see a Kirkland Police Officer at Factory Donuts next week, you can just give him or her a wink and make it your little secret.  To hell with the myths. ~j

Kirkland House Goes up in Flames

FireWoM Lots of 911 calls came in around 10 o'clock this morning when residents of Juanita saw billows of smoke and flames coming from this West of Market home (photo left, thanks LK).  Luckily, there were no injuries- the couple was able to get out of their house safely.  Witnesses said the fire grew really quickly, as is evident by the burnt up roof, attic, carport, vehicle and motorcycle.  The upper level also sustained some damage and the house is uninhabitable. The cause of the fire is not known, but Kirkland Fire will be investigating.
The cause of my near heart attack IS known.  This house is just a couple blocks away from ours and when I walked out of the gym and saw this in the sky, coupled with the 4 texts and 3 voicemails I had missed, I assumed the worst.
This is a good reminder that winter-time has the highest incidences of fires, likely from heaters and appliances.  So be extra careful, and it's always a good idea to have a household emergency exit plan in place.  Not to mention your insurance up-to-date! ~j

Want to Know What is Going on Around Here ? ?

I attended a meeting the other day where Dave Ramsay, our City Manager, gave an overview of the development that is (or was) happening around town and its current status.  There were some interesting nuggets of information that I thought I would share with you.  In my own words, of course.

Here's the quick and dirty in no apparent order:

Annexation- City Council doesn't think the citizens of Kirkland are smart enough to understand this complex issue, so they are going to decide FOR us.  HUH? I don't get it.  :-P

Costco Gas Station- Approved- happening in the next 6 mos on the north end of the lot.   Man, what I wouldn't give to have them gas my car and then try to find me a parking spot.

NE 85th St Improvements- Ramsay said some call this the 'Aurora' of Kirkland- who knew? It will look much better when the power lines go underground, sidewalks are in, a landscaped center lane, street/pedestrian lighting improvements, pickles/onions on a sesame seed bun.

Burlington Trail- King Co/Port working on acquiring the property- still discussions re: rail vs. trail

Shoreline Master Plan- Still in the works, if you live near the water you should take the time to get familiar with the proposed changes that will impact you.  The salmon's homes may take precedent over yours. Next workshop Feb 28th.

Totem Lake Mall- Leases are running out but no new news here. It's the greatest opportunity that turned into the greatest frustration. I wish someone would swoop in, buy it and turn that place around.  Patience my dear friends.

Marina Park- The decking on the wharf is getting replaced.

Heathmanphotos 013 Transit Center-Getting ready for an extreme make-over that will take a year. This function will temporarily move onto Central Way (by those big poplar trees). Maybe the rif-raf will go away too.

Kirkland Pump Station/Sewer Upgrade- right near the Transit Ctr-also getting re-done- starts in 2010

Library Library Expansion- Library closed today 1/24 for approx one year. Parking on the lower levels of the municipal garage will still be open. Limited library services will be available at Park Place Books.Or you can always head to the library in Kingsgate. You might spot Jason there?

Kirkland Wednesday Market- will be happening at Marina Park this year b/c of the library and transit center chaos.  Sounds like a great place for it to me- so long as those ducks don't get too hungry.

New Traffic Light- Going in at Kirkland Ave/3rd St (by the library/Heathman) really soon.  You never really did know the rules of that 4-way stop, did you?

McLeod Project- (Hector's strip)- Approved, waiting for financing- needs to secure tenants.

Bank of America site- The city expects a bldg permit request shortly.  All systems are a go.

Kirkland Park Place-Council approved the zoning change.  Touchstone and the Design Review Board need to work thru the site.

Antique Mall- The owner is finally (oops, did I say that outloud?) interested in re-developing the site. Stay tuned. Amen.

Park Lane- no funding now, but there are 'visioning' meetings (bring your ouija board) going on where we can dream up what we'd like it to be for the future.  Ideas such as creating a "festival style street" seem to be favored.  You can take an online survey.   It's not too late to get involved.

BUY LOCAL- you'll see this theme coming at you more and more.  We can all help keep our city's businesses afloat by spending the few dollars we have left close to home.

There. Now you know what is going on around here! ~j

What Goes Up Must Come Down......

HolidayLightingDowntown08 012 The holiday de-decorating party is happening this weekend!!  Take a break from trying to balance your checkbook and get a breath of fresh air with some fellow Kirklanders. Bring your helpful hands to the Kirkland Downtown Association (111 Park Lane) at 9:45 am on Saturday the 24th for some coffee, pastries and instructions. At 10:00am you will head out to remove the decorations with wire cutters, gloves, dressed warmly and hopefully an extra ladder if you have one handy.  At  11:30 everyone meets at Zeek's for a slice of pizza and a soda.

If you are going for extra credit, at about 12:30, Julie with the Downtown Association needs about 10 of us to help her pack everything away for next year. If you have a pick-up truck, that would really help to get the stuff over to the storage area which is just around the corner.
The Rabuchin family will be there- even the eager-to-help 5 year olds and counterproductive 3 year old.  Please come join in the community effort!  If you can, please RSVP to this email address so we know we've got enough peeps:  pattyjustloveskirkland@kirkland.net . ~j

I'm Joining the Kirkland PD

KirklandPoliceCar 003 Well, maybe not literally, but for 12 weeks I'm going to go through some behind-the-scenes training.  And you can too!  The Kirkland Police Dept Citizens Academy runs every Weds between Feb 4 and April 22nd from 6-9pm and they're taking applications now (it's free!).  If you are over 21, live or work in Kirkland and have no prior felony convictions you can come learn about officer training, investigations, special response and firearms instruction.  I might be a sharp shooter and not even know it yet. My future is bright.  Still waiting for my background check to clear, haha, college doesn't count right?

For an application or more info, check the city website  or  contact Sgt. Robert Saloum, Community Services Division, at 425-587-3401 rsaloum@ci.kirkland.wa.us or Officer Allan O'Neill at 425-587-3451 aoneill@ci.kirkland.wa.us.  I'm looking forward to this adventure and will be sure to share it with you- I can spy on the police (j/k Chief!), pick up a few new skills (do these tactics cross-over to parenting?)  and maybe even pull YOU over on my ride-along (friends beware).~j

Jason: Kirkland's Kissing Machine?

A few of you dinged me for not commenting on Kirkland resident Jason Mesnick's "Bachelor" premiere on ABC last week, so I figured I'd give you two weeks worth of my commentary now -and I'm SURE you will fill in the blanks!  First things first, he seems to have maintained his sincere, honest, likable and totally adorable persona from last season- not to mention he's clearly been spending some time at the gym. Way to go, Jason! These factors must be what forces these bachelorettes that are practically strangers (but all feel like they know him) to do otherwise ridiculous things to capture his attention. I feel like it's elevated this season, the competitive nature of it, and as we saw last night the claws are starting to come out.

As I'm watching his interactions with each of these women, I can't help but wonder what he's really thinking.  Does he have it narrowed down to 3 or 4 in his mind already?  Because he is definitely doing a kissing survey of as many of them as possible.  Which seems perfectly logical if you want to walk away from this thing with a wife, right?  These ladies are love hungry, so let's crank it up to warp speed.  I agree with most of his choices to evict from the palace so far- the 'vision board' girl (weren't those from middle school?), the obsessive wedding planner, but why is that giddy stalker hygienist still there?  She must be for the entertainment value.  I had to laugh last night when the cameraman panned into Nikki's cleavage as Jason was telling her she has "amazing attributes, and they're very obvious."

At this point, everyone seems to have a different favorite choice which is interesting to hear.  I know you men pretend you don't care, but all my girlfriends keep telling me that their husbands are on the end of the couch waving their arms and yelling at the show as if it was a football game.  Very suspicious.  As for the bachelorettes, the Jersey girl makes me laugh now and again (Lauren), and I think that Melissa from the blimp date was cute and fun.  Others seem more mature- Jillian, Stephanie (has she had some work done?). The jury is still out for me, but  I can tell you that it wouldn't have been too difficult to choose 3 more to oust last night.  Definitely still some dim stars in the mix that grate on my nerves, but I think Jason is on the right track, so long as he doesn't let each of the girls opinions about each other distract him.

This might be the year Steve and I have to break down and get a TiVO.  Despite my curiosity about Jason's fate, it sure is good to see "24" back on too.  Kiefer is out of jail and I love that far-fetched action packed show.   But we're sticking with Jason on this journey- which of the ladies is your money on??? ~j

J-Bay Didn't Skip a Beat

JBay 003 The J-Bay Bar & Grill, formerly Juanita Bay Pub on NE 120th, is open and their bar is attracting a consistent crowd already.  The parking lot looks jammed every night! The first thing they did right was that they got the s-t-i-n-k of the previous establishment out of there.  I don't know how they did it- aerators, sandblasting, fresh paint, Glade plug-ins, magic spells??  Whatever it was, it makes a huge difference to inhale some clear air when you walk in.

They have definitely up-scaled it from its previous stature.  There are lots of TV's and a big open bar area with lots of seating and plenty of tall boobily fishnet ladies to fetch you a cold brewsky or martini.  It's no wonder there's mostly dudes in there, but with the football games going in HD, it's a fair argument that could be the lure too. Sad to say it's not the food- I had some creole prawns and Steve had the roasted vegetable penne pasta - maybe the dining area is bland to match the cuisine, but they are still working the kinks out I'm sure. If I was looking for a casual local spot to have a beer (and maybe a burger would have been a better choice) and watch a game it would be a GREAT spot to hang out in the bar.

So, go try it out for yourself and let us know what you think.  Steve is already asking to go back- he may have mumbled something about the thigh-high patent boots but I can't be sure ;-).  ~j

Jason's "Bachelor" Premiere Airs Monday Night

OK Jason fans.  It's the moment you've been waiting for since last fall. Local heartthrob Jason Mesnick is back on ABC kicking off a 2-hour premiere for his debut on "The Bachelor" starting at 8pm pacific time on Monday.  He finds love again (and gets engaged!) so don't forget to tune in and watch our Kirkland boy turn on the charm. ~j

Happy 2009, Kirkland!

PolarPlunge2009 011 There was quite a turnout this morning for Kirkland's Polar Plunge 2009, despite 45 degree lake temperatures.   In previous years, I thought you had to submerge your head for it to count, but today when I registered they advised me to only go in up to my shoulders.  I spotted a Viking, a man in Superman under-roos, and some folks that looked like they just rolled out of bed and threw on their bathrobes. But I didn't see anyone carried away in stretchers so that must mean the event was a success!  I also didn't see a few of my wussie friends (you know who you are!) that 'changed their minds' at the last minute.  Whatever!

PolarPlunge2009 014 Here are some pics for you.  Check out some of the faces, haha! Steve took some video and all you can hear is everyone screaming.  In excitement? Surprise?  Pain?  It wasn't THAT bad.
Oh, and mark your calendars for the downtown de-decorating event (to get all the holiday lights down) on 1/24 from 10-12.  Lots of volunteers needed, more details in a future post. ~j

Kirkland Polar Plunge 2009- A Little Snow Won't Stop Us!

PolarPlunge 005 That's why it's polar, right?  Last year's event happened to be on a pretty balmy day considering it was January 1st in the Northwest (photo left), but after our recent weather, I'm mentally preparing myself for some seriously cold water and air this time around.  True, we were still water-skiing up until a month ago, but that was in a DRY suit, not a BATHING suit!  Good thing I've been working on my fat layer this past few weeks as it will come in handy to hold my body heat in.

So now that I've successfully lured you, let's make sure you know the details and little tricks I might have to share.  The Kirkland Polar Plunge event starts at 1pm sharp on New Year's Day at Marina Park, so get down there around 12:30 for some warm beverages and a spot at the bonfire.  Last year there were hundreds of people, some of which had already participated in other 'plunges' in Seattle that morning! The last two years I have run in from the shore with the masses, but I'm considering jumping from the dock this time around.    I think I can earn my patch either way and somehow this method seems more direct, like a sudden knife to the heart instead of needles all over my body.  But seriously, this is really fun and whether you're an old pro or a first timer, I'd better see you there!! haha! My kids are always proud to be on staff by holding my towels and boots in hopes of someday being able to take the jump themselves.

Here's what you need to remember, you living-in-the-edge plungers:  Your bathing suit with warm layers that are easy to take on/off, cozy boots like Uggs for before/after, shoes with soles that can get wet (those rocks hurt under your feet!), hat/gloves, 3 friends crazy enough to join you, 3 more friends to hold your towels and block your naked butt from the crowd when you change afterwards, and a couple of canned goods for the food bank.  Leave yourself some time afterwards to grab a free cup of soup at the Wilde Rover . So, how brave are you?  I won't chicken out, so you know you can find me there.  I'll even have some extra towel holders with me (they're cute/about 3 feet tall) so now you have no excuse.  Happy New Year, Kirkland! ~j

Random Kirkland Snowy Day Thoughts for You

Three snow days right before my kids have a 2 week winter break?!  Ack! Cabin fever is setting in quickly here so we are painting our toes, accepting Amazon deliveries (kudos to them, but the delivery guy smelled like rum), wrapping gifts, baking (and eating) banana bread, catching up on laundry,  eating chowder, watching movies, drinking hot chocolate, eating peanut brittle, and eating donuts that a friend delivered this morning.  This is not a good pattern.  Especially with the gym being closed and the polar plunge right around the corner.

SweetCakes 001 And while we are on the subject of food and treats,  you should know that Sweet Cakes at 128 Park Lane (formerly The Bath Bar) opened this week.  Susanne Park (photo left) has been baking like a madwoman and there are some amazing cookies, cakes and cupcakes at her place baked fresh daily.  Gluten free is on its way in January! Today was supposed to be 'free cookie day' but I'm wondering if she might give you a raincheck/snowcheck if you pop in there when the roads are a bit better? They're doing 10% off all holiday cookie bundles until Dec 31st.  Find them Tues- Sat 9:30am-8pm and Sunday 11-4. 821-6565.

For any of you Jason Mesnick fans looking for a posh spot to watch him and his soon-to-be fiancee from his hometown on "The Bachelor" this season, I thought you'd get a chuckle out of this offering from The Heathman.  A last minute gift for the Mrs. and her best friends, perhaps? The new season starts Jan 5th (and he IS engaged, so we don't have to be sad at the end this time).

JbayBack to food--haha, has anyone tried JBay(previously Juanita Bay Pub) which opened last week?  Although it's just a new coat of paint outside, I heard that it got upscaled on the inside- think Joey'sin Bellevue style.  Drove by the other day and there were lots of cars. We're curious to check it out and plan to slide down the hill (literally) for a visit soon. Let us know your thoughts if you've been.

Lastly, on my brain dump for the day, in case you haven't heard, City Council voted 7-0 in favor of Touchstone Development's private amendment request to build a mixed use project (office/retail/hotel) at Kirkland Park Place.  This still isn't completely baked as it will need to go through the Design Review Board (I guess we've put one back together??), but I think it's a step in the right direction for Kirkland's businesses to breathe a little more life again.  I was getting worried we'd see tumbleweeds soon. For the story and plenty of comments, check out Kirkland Views or see the council meeting here.

And here's my last little gem in this rambling post.  It's your gift for reading this far :-).  Well, it's for your kids or grandkids really- check out this link: http://portablenorthpole.sympatico.msn.ca/home .  Do the personalization ahead of time-the photo is key- my kids were nodding along with Santa and their eyes got wide as saucers when they saw their picture and name in his book.  With him watching over us, maybe we will make it through the next 2 weeks of break??? Happy Holidays, Janis & Steve

A Special Thanks to All the Elves that Lit Up Kirkland!!

Holidayparklane Holidaylightingdowntown08_006 It might have been chilly on Saturday morning, but the snow held off so that 30 magical volunteer elves could hang all of our donated lights around Kirkland's downtown.  It was really amazing having all of these good-spirited citizens, business owners, city council Holidaycentralave members, chamber members, neighborhood folks and youths working together, Holidayheritagehall_2 having fun and problem solving (where is the power outlet? how many strings do we have?? Will the drunks be able to reach these?  LOL).  I think that every neighborhood was represented and I couldn't help but feel incredibly lucky to be part of this community effort.  My heart almost stopped when I saw Heritage Hall majestically lit again (photos right, lit one by Rick Takagi). And to watch Penny Sweet jumping up and down in excitement as the colors began to stream across downtown was well worth the chapping on our hands. (Photo left, Park Lane by Rick Takagi)

You're Invited! Market Street Cafe this Wednesday...

Preview_2 The Market Street Cafe is having an open house to welcome their new Chef--Scott Shampine!   The festivities are on Wednesday, December 17th, from 6pm - 9pm.   The restaurant will have a complimentary selection of wines and free samplings of Chef Shampine's nationally acclaimed creations.

We have blogged about the Market Street Cafe in the past.   It's a cozy neighborhood restaurant on the west side of Market Street just a few blocks north of Central Way--walking distance from East of Market and West of Market neighborhoods.  The MSC is going to re-open after the first of the year!

Here is a bit more about Chef Shampine.   A native of San Francisco, CA, Chef Shampine brings 20+ years of culinary experience to his new role as the executive chef at Market Street Cafe.Scottshampine

Trained at the California Culinary Academy and Berringer School for American Chefs, Shampine was formerly th executive chef at OLEA in Portland where he was the only Oregon restaurant to make John Mariani's "The Twenty Best New Restaurants in the USA" in Esquire Magazine (November 2005) as well as Food & Wine's "376 hottest restaurants in the world" (May 2006).

Prior to moving to Portland in 2001, Shampine worked two years with Wolfgang Puck, was the stagiaire at the French Laundry, executive sous chef at Coyote Cafe in Santa Fe, New Mexico and sous chef at Aqua in San Francisco.

I met Scott a few nights ago at the MSC as he was working late preparing the new menus.  He is a fun, engaging guy and has good ideas for the new menu--which will be priced "very reasonably" compared to the previous menu at the MSC.    After talking to Scott I am convinced the food will be incredible.

So if you can drop in for a few minutes or an hour on Wednesday night I know Chef Shampine would love to meet you!   Janis and I will be there to check out the Grilled Prosciutto Wrapped Dates with Vanilla Bean-Black Pepper Oil, Foie Gras Tater Tots, and Dark Chocolate Olive Oil Chantilly.    Oh, and the free wine!  See you there?  ~Steve

Let There Be Lights!

This Saturday December 13th, 9am at The Grape Choice. Remember that. Christmas_lights

Because that is when you're going to come help us hang some lights in downtown Kirkland!! Puget Sound Energy has ever-so-kindly donated six cases of colorful energy efficient LED lights and we have a handful of white lights that have been dropped off this week. Thank you to everyone that has contributed and offered to help out. Let's try to spread some more cheer along the streets of downtown.

If you have extra lights, extension cords, or ladders to bring along with you we could still use more. Especially white lights if we want to get Heritage Hall too. But mostly we need people to get this job done! Rain or Shine or Snow- don't forget your gloves b/c it will be cold. Ho Ho Hope to see you there Saturday!
